Luis Enrique has Atlético's number

Knockout kings

Besides FC Barcelona's domination of Atlético this season and last, the Catalans have yet to be knocked out in any two-game tie over the same period, including last year's titles and this year's deep runs in the Copa del Rey and the UEFA Champions League.

Keep Calm and Carry On.

While that seems to be the unofficial mantra of the FC Barcelona players and coaching staff following the team’s third straight La Liga game without a win, there are some who are doing anything but heading into Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final return leg at Atlético Madrid, despite the fact that Barça hold a 2–1 aggregate lead.

Domestic and continental play are different beasts, and should be treated as such.

Nevertheless, those looking for serenity need only take a gander at the numbers to see why even trace amounts of skittishness are largely unwarranted heading into Wednesday’s decisive match.

The game at the Vicente Calderón will be the eighth between the two sides since Luis Enrique Martínez came to FCB, with the previous seven all ending in blaugrana victories. That’s right, no draws, no losses. Seven for seven.

Four of them came last season — two in La Liga and two in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals — the last of which was a 1–0 win at the Calderón on Match Day 37 that clinched the league title with a game to spare.

The other three have come, of course, this season — two in La Liga and last week’s UCL first leg. All of them ended in 2–1 FCB triumphs.

In all seven games FCB have outscored Atlético 14–6.
