FC Barcelona has a long list of goalscorers from around the world
Arda Turan scores against Rayo Vallecano to become the first Turk to ever do so for Barça
Arda Turan's 85th minute header against Rayo Vallecano in FC Barcelona's 5–1 victory on Thursday night made him the first Turkish player to ever score a goal while donning the blaugrana strip. Overall, players from 42 different nationalities and five continents — Europe, North America, South America, Africa and Asia — have now seen the net for the Catalan club.
Asia is the least represented continent on the list. Curiously, among those on the list, the only Asian representatives are three Filipinos: Manuel Amechazurra (1905-1915), Paulino AlcĂ¡ntara (1912-1927) and Juan Garchitorena (1915-1919).
The first African player to ever wear a Barça shirt, the Angolan Jorge Alberto Mendonça (1966-69) is one of the five African nations represented. The others include Seydou Keita of Mali (2008-12) and striker Samuel Eto'o of Cameroon, who bagged 152 goals in 232 games throughout five seasons illustrious he spent with Barça. Another big name is that of Touré Yaya of the Ivory coast.
North Americans who have scored for Barça include older players like the Costa Rican Alejandro Morera (1932-1935), as well as more recent players like the Mexican defender Rafa MĂ¡rquez (2003-2010). Two other notable Mexican players who scored for Barça are the Dos Santos brothers, Giovanni (2006-2008) and Jonathan (2008-2014).
Headlining the South Americans are, of course, Argentina's Leo Messi and Brazil's Neymar, while the Venezuelan striker Jeffren SuĂ¡rez is one more name from recent memory.
The most represented continent is Europe, which has contributed 26 of the 42 nationalities on the list, not including Spanish players. Some of the names are well known to Barça fans, like the Bulgarian Hristo Stoichkov (1990-1998), the author of 162 goals in 336 matches, the Swede Henrik Larsson (2004-06) and the Austrian Hansi Krankl, who scored 64 goals in 88 games for FC Barcelona. And how could we forget England's Gary Lineker, who scored 42 goals in 103 appearances for FCB from 1986-1989.
