FC Barcelona and Gerard Piqué earn awards
The Union of Catalan Sports Federations (UFEC) announced their sporting awards for 2015 on Thursday. FC Barcelona were named Catalan Team of the Year after winning the treble in the season gone by while Gerard Piqué was given the award for Catalan Player of the Year.
FC Barcelona centre-back Gerard Piqué spoke at an event on Thursday about the team’s current run of results, the upcoming match against Valencia and Luis Suárez.
“We hope to maintain this level that we have been showing over the last month, playing very well, until the end of the season. Based on our results and the way we have been playing, we are in one of our best spells of the season,” the defender said.
With a big match away at Valencia on Saturday (8.30pm CET), the 28-year-old spoke of the threat they might pose: “Visiting Mestalla is always difficult and now that they have a new manager it will be an extra motivation for them. We want to continue our winning spirit.”

Piqué believes that the team has improved a lot since the start of the campaign: “We did not start as well as we did in the previous season and the fact we conceded so many goals indicated that we could have been doing things better. We collectively got our act together and have improved greatly.”
Barça are on an excellent run of late, with seven consecutive wins in all competitions, scoring 28 goals and conceding just two in the process. The front three of Messi, Neymar Jr and Suárez already have 43 goals between them this campaign and Piqué feels that keeping things tight at the back will ensure all three points more often than not.
“We have conceded very few (goals) recently. Therefore, with the quality we have up front, if we can keep a clean sheet in almost all matches, it almost guarantees victory.”
Piqué singled out Suárez for his clinical ability in front of goal: “He is the best number nine in the world. He has proven it. He has scored lots of goals and, on top of that, important ones in moments where we needed them.”
