'Anything can happen in football' warns Villanovense manager Julio Cobos
Messi, Neymar, Iniesta? Bring them on says the manager of the Division 2B side, who wants to test his players against the very best in the world
After his team trained in Barcelona on Tuesday, Villanovense boss Julio Cobos spoke to the press ahead of their big day at the Camp Nou on Wednesday night. Following the 0-0 draw in the Copa del Rey first leg, his team, despite playing in the third tier of Spanish football, are still in with a shout of causing what would be one of the biggest upsets in the history of the competition.
“Our aim is to present a good image, play a serious game, make things difficult and, of course, qualify” he said. “It’ll be very difficult, but anything can happen in football.”
However, the odds are very much stacked against his side. Since the first leg, Barça have won all five of their games in amazing style, while Cobos has watched his side crumble to the same number of straight defeats. "We need to forget what’s happening in the league” he commented. “The results have been bad, but not our play. This is a different competition and that’ll do us good. We’re taking this game very seriously and we’re very excited about it.”
He added that he would prefer it if Luis Enrique was to field as strong a side as possible. “We want Messi to play” he said. “He’s the best player in the world and our players would like to be able to say they’ve played against him. We also want to play against Neymar, Iniesta, all the stars … This is our chance to show that the Villanovense players are footballers too.”
